Fell May 17, 1966

Dale was born on the 11th of June, 1947 to Dale and Arlene Umbenhauer of Pine Grove.  He was the second child in a family of nine children.  As a boy and teenager he was active in Little League and the Boy Scouts of America.  He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Pine Grove.  His spare time was spent outdoors hunting and fishing.  He attended Pine Grove Area High School, and enlisted in the Army in July of 1964.

After his training he arrived in Vietnam on the 5th of September, 1965.  He was assigned as a door-gunner on a UH1-C gunship in the 121st Aviation Company located at Soc Trang in the Mekong Delta.  He fell as a result of a helicopter mid-air collision.

He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Fourteen Air Medals, the National Defense Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.  The Vietnam government awarded him the Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Military Merit Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Besides his parents he was survived by his brothers, Richard, Harry, Kevin and Greg; sisters, Jane, Sherry, Betty, and Lori (born after his death).
