Fell October 27, 1967

Gary was born on the 19th of October, 1948, and spent his boyhood in Lebanon.  He was attending Lebanon Senior High School when he decided to join the Marines at the age of 17.  In the Marines he excelled in athletics.  He won four awards for boxing while stateside.

After receiving his basic and advanced training he arrived in Vietnam on the 8th of August, 1967.  He served as a squad leader in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.  He was mortally wounded by a land mine and survived for two days at the 3rd Field Hospital.  He pass away on Oct. 27, 1967.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.  He also received the Vietnam Campaign Medal from the Republic of Vietnam.

He was survived by his mother, Gloria Achenbach; a brother, Joseph; and a sister, Kathleen.
