Richard was born on the 3rd of November, 1945 to Clifford and Betty Mohn of Lebanon.  Growing up in Lebanon he attended local grammar schools and graduated with the Class of 1963 from Lebanon High School.  He was active in the choir, and Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

He enlisted in the Marines in August of 1963 and after basic and advanced training served tours of duty in the Mediterranian and in the Dominican Republic,  He received his orders for Vietnam and arrived there in October of 1965.  Upon arrival he was assigned to Company l, 3rd Battalion of the 4th Marine Regiment.  He fell when he sustained head wounds in a firefight in Quang Tri Province.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.  The Republic of Vietnam awarded him the Cross of Gallantry, the Military Merit Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Besides his parents, he was survuved by a brother, Paul; and a sister, Karen.  In 1964, Richard had married Mary Hartman and they had a son, Richard, Jr.  They resided in Lebanon at the time.
